Bond exemption for qualifying Colorado patrol members

Qualifying Colorado State Patrol members no longer need to provide the bond normally required by state law. Their bond must be self-insured through the Colorado State Office of Risk Management. Members must also qualify for compensation from the State Self-Insured Property Fund. The state still approves and pays for bonds required for other members. The law sets its start at 12:01 a.m. the day after 90 days have passed since final legislative adjournment. A valid referendum petition filed within that period delays the law until voters approve it at the November 2026 general election. With voter approval, it takes effect on the date of the governor’s official declaration of the vote.
