Colorado large-group plans cover more obesity care

Large-group health plans issued or renewed in Colorado must cover obesity and prediabetes treatment. Required benefits include the National Diabetes Prevention Program, medical nutrition therapy, intensive behavioral or lifestyle therapy, and metabolic and bariatric surgery. Behavioral or lifestyle therapy can take place in offices, through telehealth, or in community settings. Surgery coverage follows the 2022 guidelines named in the law. Insurers must also offer policyholders an option to buy coverage for FDA-approved obesity medicines, including at least one FDA-approved GLP-1 medicine. This medicine option is not required when premiums do not cover expected benefits. The act's default effective date is 90 days after final adjournment. A referendum petition delays the act until voter approval at the November 2026 general election and the governor's official vote declaration.

Child health plan excluded from obesity mandate

The Colorado Child Health Plan cannot include obesity and prediabetes coverage based on the new large-group coverage mandate. This restriction does not say whether the child health plan covers these services under other rules.
