Gun dealers face new reporting deadlines

Colorado gun dealers with state permits must report sales or attempted sales involving stolen, lost, or open-investigation firearms. This duty applies when dealers reasonably believe, know, should know, or become aware of the firearm's status. Dealers must report within 48 hours to law enforcement with authority over their business location. Failure to report is grounds for dealer enforcement penalties, which can include license revocation.

Gun dealers get checks with possible fees

Federally licensed gun dealers can request serial number checks before buying guns from individuals. Requests go to city police for businesses within city limits, or the county sheriff for businesses in unincorporated areas. Agencies must offer a reasonable, uniform process by July 1, 2026, and respond within 72 hours about stolen, lost, or open-investigation status. Agencies may charge fees reflecting actual and indirect costs, but must refund or waive fees when checks and responses miss the 72-hour deadline. Dealers can perform checks themselves only with federal permission to access its tracing program and the needed technology and infrastructure; reporting duties still apply.
