Vehicle owners pay lower registration surcharges

Colorado lowers the road safety surcharge by $3.70 for each qualifying vehicle or special mobile machinery registration. The registration period must begin on or after July 1, 2025, and before July 1, 2027. Only registrations subject to the surcharge qualify, so owners with multiple qualifying registrations save $3.70 on each.

Road funds go to transportation projects

For registration periods starting July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2027, Colorado changes how covered transportation revenues are split. The State Highway Fund gets 56%, counties get 24%, and cities and incorporated towns get 20%. County and municipal payments require annual approval of funding by the state legislature. State and local governments must use this money for highway construction, safety, maintenance, capacity improvements, or other legally allowed transportation projects—not administrative costs. These temporary funding rules are repealed July 1, 2028.
