Colorado disability savings deductions carry limits

Through 2030, Colorado taxpayers can deduct contributions to ABLE disability savings accounts, subject to annual limits per taxpayer, per beneficiary: $20,000 for single returns or $30,000 for joint returns. Contributions excluded from federal taxable income do not qualify, and these limits are shared with other eligible savings-plan contributions. Through 2030, interest and other earnings in ABLE withdrawals are also deductible when included in federal taxable income and used for the beneficiary’s qualified disability expenses. Account holders must add previously deducted contributions back to taxable income when withdrawals do not qualify for an exception, such as paying qualified disability expenses. Related state rules are scheduled for repeal on January 1, 2035.
