New permits and rules for funeral homes

The law updates what counts as a funeral establishment to include places used to care for human remains for service, burial, entombment, cremation, or natural organic reduction. It also includes embalming rooms, viewing areas, and business offices. Each location must have a Board-issued permit before it operates, and running without one is grounds for discipline. No separate permit is needed when a service is in a private home, church, or lodge hall, if the funeral director works from a permitted firm. Satellite locations that existed on May 12, 1988 do not have to include an embalming area.
