Delaware sets financial literacy teaching rules

Delaware's Department of Education must adopt or update rules to carry out the law, with State Board of Education approval. Those rules must include current financial literacy standards within social studies standards and treat financial literacy as a social studies subject. The department and Professional Standards Board must decide what certification educators need to teach the required course. The law does not specify those certification requirements.

Delaware students must study financial literacy

Delaware school districts and charter schools serving high school students must offer at least a half-credit financial literacy course. Students entering ninth grade in 2026–2027 or later must complete a half-credit course toward required social studies graduation credits. Schools must use lessons aligned with state standards, high-quality materials, and assessments. Local education agencies must offer teachers high-quality initial and ongoing training. Schools can partner with public or private groups or individuals for expert speakers, student competitions, achievement scholarships, or teacher training.
