The medical part of certain death certificates must be prepared and signed electronically. Authorized clinicians, such as doctors, APRNs, or PAs, must use electronic forms and electronic signatures. This aims to speed up processing and reduce delays for families and funeral directors.
When no official death investigation is needed, a doctor, a nurse practitioner (APRN), or a physician assistant (PA) can complete and sign the medical part of the death certificate. They must return it to the funeral director within 48 hours after death. PAs can also pronounce death, along with doctors and other authorized staff. Registered nurses are no longer listed as allowed to complete the medical certification.
