Patients can face more drug coverage steps

Delaware expands its step-therapy exception rules, which govern trying another medicine before insurance covers a brand-name drug. Insurers, health plans, and drug coverage reviewers can now require patients to try a biosimilar or interchangeable biological product first. These are alternatives to brand-name biologic medicines. The existing option to require an AB-rated generic equivalent remains. The law allows these treatment steps but does not require plans to use them.
