School board members can attend remotely

The law lets a school board member attend a regular or special meeting by phone or video for set reasons: the member’s illness; a family member’s illness that needs care; a public health emergency; the member’s pregnancy or immediate post‑partum care; or the member’s military deployment. A remote member counts for quorum and can vote. The technology used must let all members and witnesses hear each other at the same time. The law takes effect 30 days after enactment. Upon enactment, the Department of Education notifies each school board president and each district superintendent about these rules and the effective date.
