Lawsuit rules for free gun safety devices

Tax‑exempt nonprofits and law enforcement can give new gun safety devices to people for free and are not liable for injuries from device defects. The device must be new and in its original, unopened box. The giver must also hand out a gun safety pamphlet from a local or national safety group or a hospital. Devices include cable locks, trigger locks, and gun safes. This immunity does not cover the device’s maker, distributor, or seller. Injured people can still sue those companies.
