Smoke protection for Delaware surgical patients
Delaware hospitals and freestanding surgical centers must adopt and implement smoke evacuation policies by April 1, 2026. These policies must require smoke evacuation systems during every surgical procedure likely to generate smoke from energy-powered devices. The systems must capture and filter smoke where it starts, before it reaches anyone’s eyes or breathing passages. This protects exposed patients and health care workers. The Division of Health Care Quality enforces the requirement under its existing authority.
