Beginning July 1, 2026, standard apprentice electrician applicants must be at least 18 and enrolled in a Board-approved apprentice program. The exception for younger vocational students ends. Residential apprentice program requirements and the related limit on residential work are removed. Standard apprentice licenses no longer renew every 2 years. Licenses issued on or after July 1, 2026, expire after 5 years. Existing holders licensed for at least 5 years on that date cannot renew beyond their current expiration date. For existing holders licensed less than 5 years, expiration moves to 5 years from the current issue date, without renewal. All three groups can request a 1-year extension for good cause from the Board at least 60 days before expiration.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Delaware creates a school apprentice electrician license. Applicants must attend a Board-approved vocational program at a Delaware vocational high school. The Board checks applicants against the licensing requirements. This license does not need renewal. It stays valid until program enrollment ends or the holder turns 18, whichever happens later.
Beginning July 1, 2026, apprentice and student apprentice electricians working in Delaware must have direct onsite supervision. Supervisors must hold a master, master special, limited, limited special, residential, or journeyperson electrician license. The supervising electrician is fully responsible for the apprentice's activities while working in Delaware.
Beginning July 1, 2026, time spent inactive under Board rules no longer reduces an electrician's renewal fee. The law does not state the fee amount. Licenses other than apprentice and school apprentice licenses still require renewal every 2 years. Renewal requires a form, fees, proof of general liability insurance, and continuing education.
