900 hours and Board exam required

You must complete at least 900 hours of supervised dietetics practice in the United States or its territories. Your supervisor must be a registered dietitian, a state‑licensed health care practitioner, or someone with a U.S.-conferred doctoral degree in a related field; a non‑U.S. doctoral degree must be validated as equivalent. You must also appear when the Board schedules you and take its exam.

Higher degree needed for dietitian license

The law sets education rules to get a dietitian/nutritionist license. If you graduated before January 1, 2024, you must have at least a bachelor’s from a U.S. regionally accredited school, or a foreign degree validated as equivalent. If you graduated on or after January 1, 2024, you must have at least a master’s, or a foreign degree validated as equivalent. Your major must be human nutrition, nutrition education, food and nutrition, dietetics, or food systems management.

Legacy waiver for experienced nutritionists

The Board may waive licensure rules for people who filed by June 21, 2010, have a bachelor’s or higher in nutrition from a regionally accredited school, and have at least 10 years of nutrition work. People approved under this waiver must still meet continuing education rules.
