Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Earlier pension start for pre-2012 members

If you were first elected before January 1, 2012, you can start your pension at age 60 with at least 5 years. Or you can start at age 55 with at least 10 years. Payments begin the first month after you reach that age.

Stricter pension start for newer members

If you were first elected on or after January 1, 2012, you can start your pension at age 60 only with 20 years. Or you can start at age 65 with at least 10 years. Payments begin the first month after you reach that age.

Pension floor for earlier-elected legislators

If you were first elected before February 28, 2025, the law sets a monthly pension floor. It equals your General Assembly years times the highest per-year rate paid to any retired member. That rate is a retired member's monthly pension divided by their years of service. Members first elected on or after February 28, 2025 use a different formula set in law.
