Sussex permit fees and school surcharge

In Sussex County, the County Council sets building permit fees. The County may also add a school funding surcharge to a permit. The surcharge can be up to 1.25% of the permit’s construction value. The money can only fund school capital projects that have a Certificate of Necessity from the state education secretary. No surcharge applies to permits filed after the original certificate of occupancy when the construction value is $30,000 or less. You pay it only if the County chooses to impose it.
