New Delaware office supports immigrants

The law creates Delaware’s Office of New Americans within the Department of State to support immigrants and refugees. The Secretary of State appoints its Director. The office shares information about starting businesses, investing, using job skills, becoming a citizen, English classes, and available services. It develops ways to improve access to state resources regardless of English skills and works to prevent exploitation and fraud. It answers questions, recommends policies, reviews its work, and coordinates with the Department of Justice’s Office of Immigration Assistance. An advisory committee brings together state agencies, immigrant-serving groups, and public representation to recommend changes and improve access to services. It must hold at least one public hearing each year on attracting, retaining, and integrating immigrants. The law does not directly change taxes, benefit eligibility, wages, or fees, or provide household payments.
