New safety features for Delaware school buildings

Delaware law requires safety features in new schools and schools undergoing major renovations. The main entrance must have a secured visitor-screening area with an intercom or video call box. Its inner doors must open electronically when school staff release them. Visitor-screening vestibules, lobbies, and offices must use ballistic-resistant glass, other ballistic-resistant materials, or security film. Security film is a separate option, not a ballistic-resistant material. Classroom doors must lock from outside using a key or magnetic card. Doors that lock from both sides must meet current Delaware fire rules or the national Life Safety Code 101. A panic button or intruder alert system must work from both the school office and a handheld device.
