Delaware patients get more hygienist care

Delaware dental hygienists can provide tooth cleanings and apply sealants without a prior dentist exam. Patients receiving either service this way must see a dentist within 12 months of treatment. Under a dentist’s standing order and general supervision, hygienists can prescribe, give, and dispense fluoride and other topical agents. These include treatments for germs or tooth sensitivity. Hygienists can give local anesthesia under a licensed dentist’s direct supervision and Board standards. They can assess oral health, plan care within Board limits based on education and experience, and directly supervise dental assistants. The Board of Dentistry and Dental Hygiene must adopt rules covering these services, supervision, education, and safety.
