New Delaware State University plates cost $65

The law creates a Delaware State University plate, with issuance requiring at least 200 applications. Individuals, businesses, and other organizations can apply for eligible vehicles. Eligible vehicles include private passenger vehicles and other vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds or less. Trucks that qualify for International Registration Plan registration, alone or in a vehicle combination, cannot get the plate. Applicants pay a one-time $65 fee, separate from any annual registration fees they owe. Even applicants exempt from registration fees must pay the $65. Of that fee, $15 funds DMV promotion and administration; $50 goes through the State Treasurer to the Delaware State University Fund. Any unused administrative money also goes to that fund. Replacement plates cost an additional DMV-set fee to cover their cost. DMV and the university choose the colors and design, while plate numbers and letters match the vehicle's current base plate. DMV can replace “The First State” with “Delaware State University,” reject designs that create enforcement safety problems, and set program rules.
