Respiratory therapists gain full life-support duties

Delaware authorizes qualified, licensed respiratory care practitioners to perform all duties tied to life support outside the body. This includes extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R), and medication administration during this support. Their scope also includes respiratory testing, airway care, ventilators, resuscitation, and telemedicine or telehealth under applicable rules. Practitioners remain under general physician supervision through direct monitoring, physician-approved protocols, or written or verbal orders. Patient evaluations and decisions must stay within limits set by the physician and the Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline.
