Stricter penalties for false 911 calls

Beginning July 1, 2025, making a false 911 report that could bring a public safety response is a first-degree misdemeanor. Knowingly using emergency communications for another purpose or to avoid a service charge is also a misdemeanor. The offense becomes a third-degree felony when lawful conduct during the response proximately causes great bodily harm, permanent disfigurement, or permanent disability. It becomes a second-degree felony if that conduct proximately causes death. The repeat-felony threshold drops from four convictions to two or more; convictions count even when adjudication is withheld or the person pleads no contest.

False reporters must repay response costs

Beginning July 1, 2025, people convicted of emergency-service misuse or making a false police report must pay prosecution and investigation costs. Courts must also order restitution for qualifying damage or injury caused by lawful conduct during the emergency or law enforcement response. For emergency-service misuse, restitution to responding public safety agencies includes their full incurred costs.
