New rules for challenging court psychologists

Starting July 1, 2025, a parent seeking a different court-appointed psychologist must ask the judge handling the related family case. The judge must appoint another psychologist when the parent shows good cause, and decides who pays the appointment costs and attorney fees. For a psychologist who acted in good faith, a complainant must first ask to disqualify the psychologist before filing an administrative complaint; the complaint must include the complainant’s name, address, and phone number. In a related supplemental legal action, the claimant pays both sides’ reasonable costs and attorney fees if the psychologist is not found liable; if the psychologist is found liable, the psychologist pays the claimant’s reasonable costs and fees.
