Janvier estate settlement adds money, limits claims

Effective upon becoming law, the act authorizes Miami Beach to pay Peniel Janvier's estate $1.7 million once. The money must come from city funds not already committed. This adds to $300,000 already paid, completing the $2 million settlement. Together, these payments are the only compensation for all present and future claims arising from the incident involving Janvier's death. Attorney fees paid under this act cannot exceed 25% of its $1.7 million award, or $425,000.
