More privacy for officials and their families

Beginning July 1, 2025, Florida shields certain personal records of current members of Congress and listed Florida officials. Covered state officials include the governor, lieutenant governor, chief financial officer, attorney general, agriculture commissioner, and state lawmakers. Covered local officials include property appraisers, election supervisors, school superintendents, school board members, mayors, city commissioners, and county commissioners. The law protects partial home addresses and phone numbers for these officials, their spouses, and their adult children. For minor children, it protects names, home addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, and school or day care names and locations. A records agency other than the official’s employer must receive a written, notarized request to maintain protection. Requests must give the election or appointment date, next election date, and, when applicable, the date a child reaches adulthood. Protection covers old and new records, but ends when the officeholder or family member no longer qualifies. The exemption is scheduled to end October 2, 2030, unless reenacted.
