Higher pensions for Iowa protection workers
Iowa’s public employee retirement system increases pension benefits for vested protection-occupation members with more than 22 years of eligible service. The new formula covers active or inactive vested members retiring on or after July 1, 2026. It starts at 60% and adds 0.625 percentage point for each eligible service quarter beyond 22 years. The extra amount is capped at 20 percentage points. For earlier retirements, the prior formula adds 0.375 percentage point per extra quarter, capped at 12 additional points.
Iowa protection workers pay more toward pensions
The law shifts pension contributions toward Iowa public employee retirement system members in protection occupations. From July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2025, the contribution split is 40% employee and 60% employer. For fiscal years starting July 1, 2026, the baseline becomes half of the required contribution rate for each side. Starting with the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2025, annual adjustments raise the employee rate by 0.125 percentage point. The employer rate falls by the same amount each year.
Protection retirees get raises, lose dividends
Beginning July 1, 2026, qualifying Iowa protection-occupation pensions receive a 1.5% increase each July 1, based on the monthly allowance then payable. Members must retire from protection-occupation employment on or after July 1, 2026, and receive that occupation’s monthly pension. Before leaving employment, they must have 22 years of eligible service and have reached age 55. Payments to eligible beneficiaries or contingent annuitants also receive the increase. Recipients of this increase cannot receive the system’s separate retirement dividends.
