Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Private and student plans must cover eating disorders

Starting with plans issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2027, health plans must cover diagnosis and treatment for feeding or eating disorders. This includes student health plans sold by Kentucky colleges. Plans cannot deny or limit care based only on BMI or weight. Insurers may consider eating behaviors, need for supervised meals, lab and vital-sign results, recovery setting, and co-occurring disorders to decide medical necessity. Limited health service plans and organizations must follow these rules too.

State and university employee plans cover disorders

State employee health plans, and self‑insured plans run by state colleges and universities, must cover diagnosis and treatment for feeding or eating disorders. This applies to policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2027. Coverage applies to eligible employees and, for the state plan, their dependents.

Medicaid and KCHIP add eating-disorder coverage

Medicaid, its managed care plans, and KCHIP must cover diagnosis and treatment for feeding or eating disorders. These requirements apply starting January 1, 2027, but parts that need federal approval can start later. The Cabinet or Department must request any needed federal approval within 90 days after Section 11 takes effect. They may delay only those parts that need federal approval until approval is granted. The agency must send copies and status updates of those federal requests to the Legislative Research Commission.
