New training and penalties for deputy coroners

To serve as a deputy coroner, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent and finish a basic course in your first year. After that, non‑physicians must complete at least 18 hours of approved training each calendar year, including HIV/AIDS material. Within three years of starting, you must take a one‑time 4‑hour course on grief and giving death notices. If you do not finish required training, you are ineligible to serve and may be fired; the coroner must send written notice to you and local officials. The training commissioner can give up to 180 extra days when reasons outside your control stop you; for injury or illness, the 180 days start when you return to duty. The law removes prior reinstatement‑by‑retraining and special pay rules during ineligibility.

Full peace officer powers for coroners

When enforcing the coroner laws (KRS 72.410 to 72.470), coroners and deputies have full peace officer powers, including arrest and carrying a weapon. They can enter premises, seize evidence, require records, and impound vehicles in fatal crashes, and can hire investigators or photographers. Local fiscal courts or urban‑county governments must pay all reasonable expenses they incur for these duties.
