Quicker court action on fire hazards

Fire officials can ask a court for restraining orders or temporary or permanent injunctions to stop or fix dangerous fire code violations. A sworn complaint that the violation threatens life or limb can support emergency orders. Cases are filed in the name of the Commonwealth, by the fire official or the Attorney General if the commissioner asks, in the Circuit Court where the property is. If the official believes a crime occurred and prosecution is appropriate, they must refer it to prosecutors, who must act promptly.

Businesses face fines for fire violations

If you willfully break fire safety rules, the fire official can act after notice and a hearing. They can suspend or revoke a certificate of authority, occupancy, license, or permit. Instead of that, they can fine up to $1,000 per violation.
