Fingerprint checks for psychology and therapy licenses

The law requires fingerprint-based state and FBI background checks for psychology, occupational therapy, audiology/speech, social work, and counseling licenses. Checks apply when you first apply, when you reinstate a license, or when you seek the compact privilege to practice outside Kentucky. You must give complete fingerprints to the Kentucky State Police; after the state check, they send them to the FBI. Results go to your board, may be given to you on request, and can be used under seal in a case about discipline. Fees from the State Police or FBI cannot be higher than the actual processing cost. Boards may order a check if you are the subject of a misconduct complaint, but they cannot require a check only to renew. Boards review results when deciding compact practice privileges and must set rules to run this process.
