Medicaid expands pregnancy-related inpatient mental health coverage

Louisiana Medicaid managed care plans must cover voluntary inpatient treatment for qualifying mental health conditions. The condition must require inpatient care during pregnancy or through one year after birth or pregnancy loss. Coverage includes hospital admissions, overnight stays, treatment-related medicines, infusions, prescriptions, and counseling. Treatment decisions belong solely to an attending physician, physician assistant, psychiatrist, psychologist, medical psychologist, or nurse practitioner, consulting with the patient. Admissions must follow state voluntary-admission rules. Medicaid retains authority to set payment rules, including whether care is medically necessary. The requirement applies to new plans issued starting January 1, 2026. Existing plans must comply by renewal, no later than January 1, 2027. Implementation depends on legislative funding.

Private plans expand pregnancy-related mental health coverage

Louisiana-regulated health plans offering mental health benefits for perinatal psychiatric diagnoses must cover voluntary inpatient treatment for those conditions. All levels of covered maternal mental health inpatient treatment count as medically necessary. Providers must consider InterQual or Milliman Care Guidelines; insurers cannot deny voluntary inpatient treatment consistent with these standards. Plan deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments may still apply. Excepted-benefit plans, limited-benefit plans, and short-term policies lasting less than 12 months are excluded. New plans issued starting January 1, 2026, must comply; existing plans must comply by renewal, no later than January 1, 2027. Implementation depends on legislative funding.
