New drone restrictions at Louisiana military sites

Beginning August 1, 2025, Louisiana bans certain intentional drone uses without prior written permission from the military site's commander. Operators cannot watch, gather evidence or information about, interfere with, or photographically or electronically record covered sites or equipment. This covers federal and state military sites and military aircraft, ships, vehicles, and weapon systems located there. Covered sites include permanent bases and temporary installations used for defense or security operations, including equipment storage, drills, logistics, and rescue services. Violations carry a $2,000 to $5,000 fine and up to five years in prison at hard labor. Courts must also order the drone forfeited and destroyed, sold, or otherwise disposed of. The drone definition covers powered aircraft without a human operator, including autonomous and remotely operated aircraft, but excludes orbiting satellites. It also excludes drones used for specific surveillance activities by federal or state governments or their contractors, and drones used by local police or fire departments. Another exclusion covers drones used by regulated utility or cable businesses, municipal or public utilities, and their representatives. Their use must be within job duties involving operation, repair, or maintenance of facilities, servitudes, or property on business-owned land.
