Berkley replaces elected treasurer and collector

The law creates an appointed treasurer-collector for Berkley with the powers of both treasurer and collector. The board of selectmen appoints this officer and may remove them only after a chance for a hearing. The board can sign a job contract for up to three years that sets pay, benefits, severance, expense reimbursement, liability insurance, discipline, termination, reappointment, performance standards, and leave. All pay and benefits depend on money approved each year. The elected treasurer and collector offices are abolished. Current officeholders may keep serving until their terms end or until a treasurer-collector is appointed, whichever comes first. Existing contracts and liabilities stay in force. The appointed treasurer-collector is the legal successor and receives all records, property, and equipment. The law takes effect on passage.
