Residency rule for Newton police and fire

Members of Newton’s regular police, fire, and fire alarm (wires) division must live near the city. You must live in Newton, within 35 miles of Newton’s border, or within a distance set by a union contract under state law. You have nine months from your appointment to meet this rule. Distance is measured from the closest Newton border to the closest border of the city or town where you live. This rule takes effect upon passage.
