At-will, no civil service for special officers

Service ends the last day of the month you turn 70. The chief can remove you at any time, and benefits end when your appointment ends. You are not covered by state civil service or collective bargaining rules. Being appointed does not guarantee any detail, and the mayor has the final say on appointments and removals. State injury-on-duty and certain pension provisions (111F, 85H, 85H½) do not apply.

Retiree hours and pay caps apply

State retiree rules limit how many hours you can work and how much you can earn. The law applies the caps in Chapter 32, section 91(b), to your detail pay.

Special officers face fees and training rules

You must follow department rules set by the chief. The chief can limit which and how many details you work. You may have to pay for training, medical exams, insurance, uniforms, and equipment, based on a fee schedule the chief sets.

Retired North Adams officers can work paid details

The law lets the mayor appoint retired North Adams police officers as special officers for paid details. You must have served as a regular North Adams officer and retired by superannuation. If you retired more than 5 years ago without keeping POST certification, you cannot be appointed. The chief sets department rules, and the city may require a medical exam that you pay for. While on your detail duties, you have the same arrest powers as regular officers.
