Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 2 mixed.

Residents get preference for fire jobs

The Town Manager must consult the Fire Chief on all Fire Department hires. For every appointment—temporary, permanent, full-time, part-time, or on call—Provincetown residents get hiring preference. This applies to all roles in the department.

Fire board created and emergency roles

The Town Manager appoints a Board of Fire Engineers for one-year terms, with up to seven members. The Fire Chief is responsible for putting out fires, protecting life and property, and running emergency medical services. The Chief can coordinate with federal, state, county, and nearby towns. During a declared emergency, the Chief supports the Field Director.

New rules for hiring the Fire Chief

The Town Manager appoints the Fire Chief. The Select Board has 15 days to confirm or object; no action means confirmation. The Town and Chief must sign a written contract that sets duties, powers, and benefits. The Board of Fire Engineers may recommend candidates, but the Chief does not have to be on the Board.
