Senior tax relief has a townwide cap

The law gives Arlington two ways to fund senior property tax exemptions: a proportional share of the tax levy on residential taxpayers, or money from existing funds. The total exemptions cannot exceed 1 percent of the town’s tax levy. Seniors receiving exemptions get tax relief, while residential taxpayers may share the cost under the levy option. The law took effect upon passage.
