Standard rates and caps for police tows

Beginning October 1, 2026, the State Police set maximum approved rates for light, medium, and heavy police‑initiated tows, and listed tow companies must follow them but can charge less. Light‑duty rates cannot be more than 80% of the medium‑duty maximum. Billing by the pound is not allowed. Light‑duty means a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less. A committee recommends the rates and a complaint process and meets at least every three years.

Police towing rules cover all vehicles

Beginning October 1, 2026, police‑initiated towing rules apply to any motor vehicle, not just commercial ones. If police authorize or dispatch a tow, listed tow companies can tow disabled or abandoned vehicles. Drivers are more likely to face a tow and towing fees under these rules.
