Longer permits and no application fee for retired officers

Beginning October 1, 2026, retired Maryland law enforcement officers who retired in good standing get longer handgun carry permits. The permit expires on the last day of your birth month, five years after it was issued. You can renew for five-year periods if you still meet the permit qualifications. You usually do not need new fingerprints unless the Secretary needs them to confirm your identity. You do not pay the nonrefundable handgun permit application fee.
