Beginning July 1, 2026, promoted Maryland police employees and deputy State Fire Marshals keep their pay step. They get pay for the new rank in the same step they held before; the old rule that could drop a step is repealed. The Secretary sets a formal pay plan for police and State Police communications staff, with ranks and grades, approved by the Budget Secretary and funded by the State budget. Each covered worker gets the plan’s pay rate and length of service step increases. Step timing: those employed on July 1, 1967 move up each July 1; all others move up on their work‑anniversary date.
