Trailer owners now liable for video tolls

Beginning January 1, 2027, the law makes registered owners of Class G (trailer) vehicles responsible for video tolls when no toll is paid. The Maryland Transportation Authority sends a notice of toll due to the address on file. You have at least 30 days to pay. Trailers are now included in the video toll rules and definitions.

Who pays when your trailer is towed

Beginning January 1, 2027, if your trailer was being towed during a video toll, you can shift the bill to the tow‑vehicle driver. Send the towing contract or other accepted proof by the deadline on the notice. The proof must list the driver’s name, address, and driver’s license number. The law also makes an owner penalty waiver no longer automatic when that driver is convicted for the same toll; it is now discretionary.
