Schools must plan for disability access

Beginning July 1, 2026, each local school system must check every public school for accessibility for students with disabilities as part of safety reviews. Schools must update each emergency plan to include accommodations for students with disabilities during emergencies. Reviews and plans are coordinated with the state Center and the school facility assessment process. By August 1 each year, systems must report to the Maryland Center for School Safety any time a facility became inaccessible in a way that could block evacuation, plus data on threats, responses, and plan failures. The Center works with school systems to fix weaknesses found in these reports.

School safety reports now public

Beginning July 1, 2026, the annual school safety reports sent to the state are no longer confidential. The public can request these reports under Maryland’s public records law. This improves oversight and transparency. It also removes privacy limits that once restricted who could see the reports.
