Leadership and job protections for Capitol Police

The Secretary of General Services appoints the Maryland Capitol Police Chief, who runs and supervises the force. The Chief serves at the Secretary’s pleasure. Members cannot be involuntarily transferred from one site to another.

Coordination rules for using new powers

When the Maryland Capitol Police use statewide powers, the Department must usually tell the Secretary of State Police ahead of time, unless it is an emergency. After actions, it must notify listed local and State law‑enforcement leaders. All notices must follow State regulations, policies, procedures, and any MOUs. In Baltimore City, the Department must have a written MOU with the Baltimore Police Department before using these powers. Officers may use police powers only after meeting State training standards and being officially designated.

Wider reach for Maryland Capitol Police

The Maryland Capitol Police can act up to 2,000 feet from state‑owned or state‑leased buildings and grounds. They can also investigate and enforce criminal, parking, and motor vehicle laws across Maryland. Officers have the same powers as State peace and police officers, as set by law.
