Maryland psychedelics task force timeline

The law continues the Task Force on Responsible Use of Natural Psychedelic Substances. One senator and one delegate serve, along with top health, disabilities, veterans, and cannabis officials or their designees. The Governor appoints other members, including a Maryland HBCU representative, researchers, clinicians, a tribal representative, law enforcement, and a patient. The Governor names the chair, and the Maryland Cannabis Administration provides staff. Members get no pay, but can be reimbursed for travel under state rules. The law starts July 1, 2024 and ends December 31, 2027.

Study safe access to natural psychedelics

The Task Force studies current laws and the best science on benefits and risks of natural psychedelic substances. It looks at barriers for health workers and facilitators, like insurance, licensing, zoning, advertising, and banking. It must recommend a Maryland Natural Psychedelic Substance Access Program, covering permits, education and safety rules, treatment and regulated support, and production. It must also recommend ways to move away from criminal penalties for nonviolent conduct, including civil fines, expungement, and possible release for some people with nonviolent offenses. Reports are due by July 31, 2025, and October 31, 2026. The law defines these substances to include psilocybin, psilocin, DMT, and mescaline, and it excludes peyote; the Task Force can add other natural psychedelics.
