Maryland Medicaid covers orthoses in 2027

Beginning January 1, 2027, Maryland Medicaid covers orthoses. The program follows the same coverage rules set in state law for these devices, including parts, repairs, and replacements as allowed.

More coverage for braces and prostheses

Starting January 1, 2027, for policies issued, delivered, or renewed on or after that date, Maryland insurers, nonprofit plans, and HMOs must cover orthoses once each year, including parts, repairs, and allowed replacements. Your treating provider’s medical-necessity decision controls coverage for orthoses and prostheses when needed for daily life, essential job tasks, or physical activities like running, biking, swimming, or strength training. Plans cannot charge higher copays or coinsurance for orthoses than for similar care, and they cannot add separate annual or lifetime dollar caps just for orthoses. They also cannot use medical-necessity rules for orthoses that are stricter than Medicare. Replacements are covered when your body changes or the device is beyond repair, but not if damage is from misuse; if the device is under one year old, the plan may ask your provider to confirm the need. Plans that use networks must follow Maryland provider-panel rules.
