Police must train for autism and dementia
The law requires Maryland police training to cover autism, dementia, and intellectual disabilities. Officers learn to find people who wander, search near water, use sensory-aware approaches, reunify families, document cases, and work with other agencies. The Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission sets this for entrance-level training and, when it decides, for in-service training. It applies to State, county, and city police training schools and follows federal and State constitutional rules. Beginning October 1, 2026, these requirements are in place.
