Dorchester detention officers face retirement system switch

Beginning June 1, 2026, qualifying Dorchester County detention officers must join Maryland’s Correctional Officers’ Retirement System if the county joins. This applies to officers in the job before June 1, 2026, who remain through that date. Their earlier county employment counts toward retirement eligibility and service credit. Upon joining and receiving that credit, they leave the Employees’ Pension System and lose all further benefit rights under it. For officers transferring from that system, Title 37’s service-transfer rules do not apply. Asset transfers and crediting on the effective date follow § 31-2B-05(C).
