State fire code adopts national life safety rules

The State Fire Prevention Commission adopts a State Fire Prevention Code with statewide force of law. The Code follows widely accepted fire-safety standards. It incorporates the 2024 Life Safety Code sections 30.7.5 and 31.7.5. It usually does not change existing equipment unless the Commission finds a safety hazard. The law takes effect April 14, 2026.

Trash can wait in apartment corridors

Starting April 14, 2026, buildings under the State Fire Prevention Code may place trash and recycling in corridors and exits. This is only for materials waiting for a scheduled pickup. Placement must follow the 2024 Life Safety Code sections 30.7.5 and 31.7.5.
