Grants to renovate nonpublic special education schools

Beginning July 1, 2026, the state provides grants to eligible nonpublic special education schools. Money can fund classroom and facility renovations, upgrades to on-site residential cottages, and health, safety, and accessibility work. It can also pay for infrastructure and technology upgrades and new construction needed to meet Maryland Department of Education standards. A school qualifies only if it offers a Maryland-approved program (high school credits or an elementary/middle curriculum) and serves students placed under Education §8-406. The Interagency Commission on School Construction runs the program and may give priority to projects that fix health or safety risks, are needed for compliance, or serve mostly Maryland students. Lawmakers state they want at least $5 million in the capital budget each year, but funding is set through the budget process.
