Counties must report large building permits

Starting Oct. 1, 2026, counties and cities must tell the Maryland Department of the Environment when they accept a permit application for a new building with 35,000 square feet or more. Parking garage area does not count toward the 35,000 square feet. They must send the notice within 10 business days. It must include the address, permit number, total square feet, building type, planned energy sources, and owner contact. This rule does not apply if a utility service request or a development or building permit was filed before Oct. 1, 2026.
